Marin Cilic vs Daniil Medvedev prediction
Marin Cilic impressed at Wimbledon last year, defeating Jack Draper en route to the round-of-16. That was his best result at the All England Club since getting through to the final in 2017. Cilic will hope for a similar showing or better this time around and began his grass court season with a quarter-final appearance at the Libema Open. Cilic then turned his attention to Queen’s Club, but the veteran, who won the event in 2012 and 2018, lost in round one to Ugo Humbert.
Daniil Medvedev is his first-round opponent. The Russian is a two-time semi-finalist at Wimbledon, but he lost in round one to Benjamin Bonzi last year. The former world number one advanced to the semi-finals at the Libema Open but lost to Kamil Majchrzak. He then competed in Halle, reaching the last eight before falling to a defeat against Daniel Altmaier.
Medvedev leads the head-to-head 4-1 and 2-0 on grass. The Russian beat Cilic in Rosmalen two weeks ago but was taken to a deciding set. They also played against each at the third-round stage of Wimbledon five years ago, with Medvedev coming from behind to win in five sets
This is one of the most eye-catching first-round matches in the draw. Cilic remains a dangerous opponent on this surface and can trouble Medvedev for stretches of the match, but the latter’s superior consistency should see him through.
