Marie Bouzkova defeated Renata Zarazua in straight sets to make it through to the second-round in Melbourne. She dominated the first set and despite going a break down in the second, recovered to win 6-2 7-5.
She takes on world number two Iga Swiatek next. Swiatek began her quest for a first Australian Open and the Career Grand Slam with a win over Yue Yuan. It wasn’t a convincing performance by the Pole, as Yuan served for the first set at 5-4, but Swiatek broke back and squeezed ahead in the tiebreak. She largely controlled the second set to win 7-6 (7) 6-3.
Swiatek leads the head-to-head 2-0 and has never dropped a set to Bouzkova. The last time they faced each other was in October last year, with the six-time Grand Slam champion easily winning 6-1 6-1 at the Wuhan Open. She will need to vastly improve her performance levels if she is to be competitive at this event.
