Mariano Navone began his season with a first-round loss at the Hong Kong Open to home favourite Coleman Wong. The Argentine was broken on three occasions as he dropped the first set. However, Navone looked set to level the match up in the second as he broke in the ninth game to serve for the set, but Wong quickly wrestled back the momentum with two consecutive breaks of his own to advance.
He faces Alex Michelsen in the first-round of the Auckland Open. Michelsen made an encouraging start to the season in Brisbane as he got through to the semi-finals. The American came from a set down to beat James Duckworth in the first-round and then produced a fine display to continue his unbeaten ATP record against Learner Tien. A victory against compatriot Sebastian Korda sent Michelsen into the last four, where he was defeated by former world number one Daniil Medvedev despite a strong start.
Michelsen has momentum on his side after a strong showing in Brisbane and will be confident of a win against Navone.
