Maria Sakkari has shown glimpses of her top level in the opening weeks of the season. The former world number three, who is 52 in the world after a difficult couple of seasons, impressed at the United Cup as she defeated former Grand Slam champions Naomi Osaka and Emma Raducanu in her singles matches. However, she lost to Coco Gauff in the quarter-finals and then crashed out in Adelaide early after a straight sets defeat to Daria Kasatkina.
She goes up against Leolia Jeanjean in round one. Jeanjean fared far worse in the United Cup, losing both of her singles matches for France against Belinda Bencic and Jasmine Paolini. The 30-year-old is ranked just outside of the top 100 in the world.
They have played once before, with Sakkari beating Jeanjean in Berlin three and a half years ago. Sakkari all-court game should have too much for Jeanjean, as she aims for a strong showing in Melbourne.
