Maria Sakkari produced one of her finest performances in years to down three-time champion Iga Swiatek and book a spot in the last four in Doha.
The Greek underdog hit back to snatch a 2-6 6-4 7-5 victory to upset the top seed and tee up a sixth career meeting with Karolina Muchova.
The Czech ended Anna Kalinskaya’s eye-catching run with solid 6-3 6-4 success and will be confident in her game-plan against Sakkari.
Indeed, the 14th seed has not lost to Maria since 2016 and leads 4-1 in the head-to-head, although it is 1-1 on hardcourts.
It’s tough to bet against Sakkari given the way she has played this week, but Muchova is such a brilliant all-round player when fully fit and she’s looked ominous in the draw over the past few days.
It may be worth considering it going three but Karolina looks a likely winner and we don’t see Sakkari repeating the heroics that stunned Swiatek.
