Maria Sakkari vs Elise Mertens prediction

Maria Sakkari booked her place in the next stage of the Libema Open as she defeated Anouk Koevermans 6-3 6-4 in the first-round. The Greek was not at her best and struggled at times on her serve, being broken on two occasions and only making 58% of her first serves in total.

Nevertheless, she still managed to get through without the drop of a set and goes up against third seed Elise Mertens next. Mertens defeated Viktoriya Tomova 6-4 6-0 to advance. A tightly fought first set went the way of the Belgian before she raced ahead in the second.

These two have played each other on 10 occasions, with Sakkari leading the head-to-head 6-4 but this will be their first match on grass. The Greek has also won their last three meetings, with the latest taking place at the United Cup in January 2023.

However, Sakkari has suffered a fall from grace since then which has seen her drop out of the world’s top 50 and she is not the same force as she used to be. She is likely to push Mertens all the way, but we expect the Belgian to win this.

Maria Sakkari vs Elise Mertens tip: Elise Mertens to win 2-1
