Maria Sakkari vs Donna Vekic prediction

Maria Sakkari’s China Open campaign ended at the third-round stage, following a defeat to Elina Svitolina. This was preceded by a quarter-final run at the Singapore Open. Sakkari has moved back inside the top 40 of the world rankings this season, with her most impressive result being a WTA 1000 semi-final appearance in Doha. She also reached the final in Athens. 

Her opponent in the first-round of the Wuhan Open is Donna Vekic. The Croatian looked on course for her biggest win of the season in Beijing as she was a set and a double break up against Iga Swiatek in the third-round. Despite serving for the match, Vekic faltered as Swiatek fought back to win in three. Vekic had previously struggled for consistent results since winning the title at Queen’s Club during the grass court season.

These two have met on 11 occasions, with Vekic leading 7-4 and 5-2 on outdoor hard court. She won their most recent meeting at the Monterrey Open. Neither player has been entirely convincing on hard courts recently, and a competitive encounter seems likely.
