Marcos Giron notched up his first ever victory over compatriot Brandon Nakashima to make the last eight of the Hellenic Championship in Athens. A tight first set saw Giron save two set points as he was serving to stay in it at 6-5 down. He then went ahead after a prolonged tiebreak. That seemed to take the wind out of Nakashima’s sails as Giron cruised to victory in the second, winning 7-6 (7) 6-1.
He will now face Yannick Hanfmann as he advanced to his second ATP quarter-final of the season after beating Vit Kopriva in three sets. The German seemed to be on course for a comfortable win, having taken the first set and gone 4-2 in the second, but Kopriva hit back with two breaks of his own to level the match. It required a break from Hanfmann in the 11th game of the decider to secure a 6-2 5-7 7-5 victory. He only converted four out of his 14 break point opportunities during the match.
Giron will be extremely motivated to get through this one, having lost his five previous quarter-finals on the ATP Tour this season. This is his best opportunity, against an opponent nearly 50 places down in the rankings, and he’ll be expected to advance.
