The Czech has reached the latter stages of pretty much every tournament he has entered, including a title triumph in Auckland.
The 20-year-old only reached the second round here last year so there’s real scope for him to push towards a place in the top ten for the first time with another deep run here.
His first hurdle is Marcos Giron, who he beat in four sets at Wimbledon last year.
The American saw off Mariano Navone 4-6 7-5 6-3 but will need another gear to trouble Mensik.
Giron is capable of causing problems but the 12th seed is so solid right now, it’s hard to see where the breaks will come.
