Marcos Giron was the second seed in Washington Open qualifying, and he managed to navigate his way through to the main draw after two straight set victories. The American was able to win a couple of matches at Wimbledon, losing in the third-round to world number two Alexander Zverev. His best results on the ATP Tour this season occurred right at the start of the year, with back-to-back semi-final appearances in Hong Kong and Adelaide.
He will face Cruz Hewitt, who is set to make his first main draw appearance on the ATP Tour at the age of just 17. The Australian, son of Lleyton, qualified after holding leads against Dusan Lajovic and Zachary Svajda, before each opponent retired. Hewitt reached the final of the boy’s singles at Wimbledon earlier this month.
Hewitt should be able to make this a competitive match, but Giron may just have too much firepower to overwhelm the teenager.
