Marcos Giron defeated Japanese qualifier Sho Shimabukuro 6-3, 7-5 in the first round the other day. The American was unfortunate to lose a hard-fought clash with eventual winner Taylor Fritz in the first round of the Dallas Open last week.

World number 12 Casper Ruud, who enjoyed his best performance at an Australian Open last month by reaching the fourth round, hasn’t played since that four set defeat to Ben Shelton. Ruud’s year began how it ended, in quite disappointing fashion, having lost to Fabian Maroszan in straight sets at the ASB Classic.

Ruud has to remain the favourite for this against Giron but the Norwegian is not playing too well at the moment and a hard-fought clash may be in store for the three-time Grand Slam finalist.
