Marcos Giron advanced to the next stage of the Auckland Open after his second win over Alexandre Muller within the space of a week. Giron defeated Muller in Hong Kong last week and did the same here, winning in even more comfortable fashion as he claimed a 6-2 6-2 victory.

He will face Alex Michelsen next. The American recovered from a poor start in his first-round match to beat Mariano Navone in three sets. Michelsen lost five games in a row as he went behind but levelled the match up in the second set. Despite relinquishing his early break advantage in the decider, Michelsen broke in the 12th game to win 2-6 6-2 7-5 after two hours and 25 minutes.

Giron leads the head-to-head 2-0 after wins in Newport and Vienna in 2024. Giron has the head-to-head advantage and has excellent consistency from the baseline. However, Michelsen did perform well in Brisbane last week as he made the semi-finals, and his aggressive use of the serve is likely to be a weapon here. This has the makings of a three set match.
