Marcos Giron has put in some encouraging performances during this Asian swing so far. He began by making the quarter-finals in Chengdu, as he defeated Ethan Quinn and Lorenzo Sonego. In his last eight match, he would lose to Brandon Nakashima in three sets, being on the end of a tiebreak decider. It was a case of déjà vu for the American, as he also lost to another compatriot, Sebastian Korda, in similar fashion in round one of the Japan Open. Korda would come back to win 4-6 6-3 7-6.
Alejandro Tabilo displayed his best form for quite some time in September. The Chilean competed in the Guangzhou Challenger, making it all the way to the final where he lost to Juan Manuel Cerundolo. He then followed that up with his best result of the season in Chengdu, as he claimed the title with an incredible run all the way from qualifying. He defeated French Open semi-finalist Lorenzo Musetti in the final despite the Italian having championship points. This resulted in him climbing 40 places in the rankings to 72 in the world. A quick turnaround saw him lose to Zizou Bergs in Tokyo but he qualified for this tournament with two straight set wins.
Both players are in form but it’s hard to look past Tabilo after such an impressive title win just over a week ago.
