Marcos Giron got off to a strong start in Brussels as he beat Mattia Bellucci in straight sets. Giron wasn’t broken on serve and gave up just one break point overall. He broke at the start of both sets and that was all he needed to wrap up a 6-3 6-4 victory. That was his first victory in three matches.
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina’s season has taken a slide since he squandered championship points in the Washington Open final back in July. His Asian swing saw him lose in two out of four matches, as he was defeated by former world number one Daniil Medvedev at both Beijing and Shanghai.
The Spaniard does lead the head-to-head 2-0 and 1-0 on hard court. Their last match was a comprehensive victory for Davidovich Fokina at the US Open two years ago. Giron could push him indoors but Davidovich Fokina’s aggression, mainly on return, should create plenty of opportunities in his favour.
