Magdalena Frech battled past former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova to book her place in round two of the Brisbane International. She recovered from a 5-3 deficit in the first set, reeled off four straight games to go in front. Vondrousova took the second but Frech completely dominated the third set tiebreak, winning all seven points to seal a 7-5 6-7 (3) 7-6 (0) victory after three hours and 23 minutes.
Her opponent next is Linda Noskova. The 21-year-old begins this season at her highest ranking of 12 in the world. She was unable to pick up a title last season but did make three finals, including at her home event in Prague where she lost to compatriot Marie Bouzkova. She also got through to her first WTA 1000 final in Beijing.
She leads the head-to-head 2-1 and 2-0 on outdoor hard courts. She will be raring to go and is strong value to come through this in straight sets.
