Magdalena Frech vs Jasmine Paolini prediction

Madalena Frech brushed aside Veronika Erjavec in the first-round of the Australian Open. Frech was not broken on serve as she wrapped up a 6-1 6-1 victory after just one hour and two minutes. She withdrew from the Hobart International last week due to a thigh injury, but she seemed to be moving freely and will now face Jasmine Paolini in the next round of the event.

Paolini enjoyed a similarly comfortable first-round match as she beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich in straight sets. The world number eight created 10 break point opportunities overall, winning 6-1 6-2 after one hour and nine minutes. Her best result here was a run to the round-of-16 in 2024.

The head-to-head is locked at 1-1, with Paolini leading 1-0 on hard courts. Frech won their first meeting in Madrid three years ago, while Paolini easily won their next match in Cleveland later that year. 

Paolini is the favourite here, with her excellent consistency and variety, but Frech’s aggression could make this a competitive second-round match.
