Magdalena Frech lost in the first-round of Queen’s Club to Diana Shnaider and could only make the second-round of the German Open a week later. She produced a fine performance to defeat Mirra Andreeva but then came unstuck against an in-form Amanda Anisimova.
Clara Tauson opted to compete in Nottingham last week and won her first two matches in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals. Despite being the second seed, Tauson’s tournament ended there as she fell to a 6-2 7-5 loss to Magda Linette. Nevertheless, it was the first time the Dane had made the last eight of a grass court event, and she seems to have made strides on the surface.
There are just two places separating them in the world rankings, with both situated just outside the top 20. Tauson has made the stronger start on the surface this year and may just edge this one.
