The Pole came out on top 9-7 in a tie-break decider to take down the 13th seed by a 6-3 4-6 7-6 scoreline.
The world number 59 will now hope to break her hoodoo against American Ann Li, who added to Leylah Fernandez’s recent woes with a 6-4 6-3 triumph over the Canadian.
Li has won all four of her meeting so far with Frech, although three did go the distance and the last one was back in 2022.
The USA’s world number 41 does seem to have some quality momentum at present but Frech will also be buoyant after that first round success, so given their history, another three-setter looks highly plausible.
