Magda Linette advanced to the next stage of the Merida Open after defeating Tatjana Maria in straight sets. The Pole went a break down on two occasions in the first set, but crucially broke back when Maria was serving for the set at 6-5 up. She won the last four points of the tiebreak to take the lead, before controlling the second set to win 7-6 (3) 6-3 after one hour and 35 minutes.

She was broken in her first two service games as she fell 3-0 behind, but then won five of the next six service games to pull ahead.
