Magda Linette reached the last 16 of the Miami Open for the second time in the last three years with a straight-sets win over world number three Coco Gauff, and she will now seek only a second quarter-final in a WTA 1000 event after her last-eight appearance in the Wuhan Open last year.
It’s a first quarter-final of the year for Jasmine Paolini, who overcame Naomi Osaka in the round 16, losing the first set but rallying to claim victory in the first-ever meeting between the pair.
This amounts to the Italian’s best run at this tournament, and it is a welcome one given that she has been slipping down the rankings a little of late.
Linette and Paolini have faced each other three times before, once on each surface, with their most recent coming on the hard courts of the China Open last September. Linette was a straight-sets winner on that occasion, and with her general preference being for faster services, we think she can upset the odds and navigate her way into the semi-finals.
