Maddison Inglis squeezed past Kimberly Birrell in the first-round of the Australian Open to advance. She took the first set on a tiebreak and served for the match in the second, but Birrell fought back and forced another tiebreak. Despite Inglis having match points, Birrell levelled it up. She will face Laura Siegemund next. The German pulled off an incredible comeback to defeat Liudmila Samsonova. Samsonova completely dominated the first half of the match, winning the first set without the drop of a game and racing to a 5-2 lead in the second. Somehow, Siegemund fought back by winning five games in a row to claim the second set. The 37-year-old ended the match strongly to win 0-6 7-5 6-4.
