Mackenzie McDonald came from a set down to win both of his qualifying matches in Athens. It’s not been a particularly strong season for the American and he is outside the top 100 of the world rankings once again. He has failed to make it past the second-round of any ATP tournament in 2025, though has fared better on the Challenger Tour, with two runner-up finishes in San Diego and Jinan.
Tomas Martin Etcheverry is his first-round opponent. The Argentine made back-to-back ATP quarter-finals in Hangzhou and Stockholm, while he also qualified for the Paris Masters but then suffered a disappointing first-round loss to compatriot Camilo Ugo Carabelli. His best result of the season was a semi-final finish in Hamburg on the eve of Roland Garros.
Etcheverry has enjoyed the stronger season and will start this one as the favourite. McDonald still can pose problems with his all-round game, but the Argentine is comfortably higher in the rankings and will be expected to win.
