Mackenzie McDonald got his campaign in Toronto off to a winning start as he defeated David Goffin in straight sets. The American was 4-2 down in the first set but reeled off four straight games to strike the first blow in the contest. The second went on serve until McDonald broke the Belgian’s serve in the 10th service game to seal a 6-4 6-4 win.
Jiri Lehecka competed in Washington last week and lost in the third-round to Alex de Minaur, who went on to win the tournament. Nevertheless, Lehecka ran him close, losing 7-6 6-7 6-4. In terms of his overall season, he made the final of Queen’s Club but disappointed at Wimbledon, only making the second-round. He also has a title on hard courts in 2025, having won the Brisbane International in his first tournament of the year.
Lehecka, the world number 27, will be a clear favourite to win against McDonald.
