Luciano Darderi has not featured since his surprise defeat to Francisco Comesana in the second-round of Roland Garros. The Italian advanced to the semi-finals of a Masters 1000 event for the first time at the Italian Open last week, while he also won a title in Santiago earlier this year.
The player he beat in the final of that event was Yannick Hanfmann, and he will be Darderi’s round-of-16 opponent after the German won his first match in Mallorca. Hanfmann got past Adolfo Daniel Vallejo in two tiebreaks to begin his campaign with a victory. He failed to serve out the first set but kept his composure at key points to win 7-6 (2) 7-6 (2).
Their final in Santiago was one of four meetings between the pair in 2026 alone. Darderi leads the overall ATP head-to-head 5-0, although this will be their first meeting away from clay. A faster surface is likely to play to Hanfmann’s strengths, and this may represent his best opportunity yet to get the better of his opponent.
