Luciano Darderi competed in Winston-Salem a week prior to this major taking place, losing to Miomir Kecmanovic after getting past Mackenzie McDonald in three sets. The Italian has performed brilliantly on clay courts this season, with three titles on the surface, but he has just two victories from nine matches on hard courts in 2025.
Rinky Hijikata has not featured on the tour since his retirement midway through his second qualifying match at the Washington Open in late July. The Australian is ranked just inside the top 100 at 96 in the world. He has found it tough going this season, with his best result being right at the start of the year in Adelaide when he made the quarter-finals.
Darderi leads the head-to-head 1-0 after defeating Hijikata in straight sets in the first-round of the French Open last year. The Italian could be susceptible to an upset here, but Hijikata’s lack of match sharpness is likely to count against him, especially over five sets. We still give the edge to Darderi.
