Darderi has picked up three titles on clay this season but has struggled on outdoor hard courts, with this win being just his third of the season. Nevertheless, he will take plenty of confidence from such a commanding victory.
He now goes up against Eliot Spizzirri, who won his first match at a major after getting past Stefan Dostanic in three sets. The world number 127 was broken when serving for the first set but still went in front, and he made far fewer errors than his opponent during the match as he won 7-5 6-4 7-6.
Darderi has the far greater pedigree but will be wary of the threat Spizzirri poses on these courts, along with home support. Despite not having the best record on this surface, the Italian should still be expected to come through and win.
