Luciano Darderi makes his first appearance of 2026 in Auckland after receiving a bye in the first-round. The Italian enjoyed a very strong campaign in 2025 as he won three ATP titles, along with a Challenger to move to 24 in the world, his highest ever ranking. However, they were all on clay, and Darderi struggled to make an impact elsewhere, winning just six of his 21 matches on hard courts.
He faces Alejandro Tabilo in the round-of-16. The Chilean got past Camilo Ugo Carabelli in straight sets to set up a match with Darderi. It was a very comfortable match for Tabilo, as he did not even concede a break point and broke three times to win 6-4 6-2.
Tabilo leads the ATP head-to-head 2-1. Their most recent meeting was in Chengdu last autumn, with Tabilo defeating Darderi in straight sets on his way to the title. The Chilean has the edge on hard courts and could pull off another result in his favour here.
