Luca van Assche won an all-French affair to reach his first ever ATP Tour final in Estoril.
The world number 78 defeated Hugo Gaston 6-4 7-5 to set up a Sunday showdown for the title with fourth seed Alexander Blockx.
The Belgian will also feature in his maiden top-tier final after coming back from 2-5 down in the second set and 0-4 in the third to defeat second seed Luciano Darderi 5-7 7-6 7-6.
This will be their maiden meeting on the main tour but van Assche did win 6-2 6-4 in a final in Lille earlier this year.
Blockx will want revenge but given the late finish in his semi-final that lasted almost three hours, the advantage is surely with the Frenchman. With that in mind, we think it’s worth the risk on Luca for greater reward.
