Luca Van Assche continued his brilliant year as he notched up his fifth title of the season and his fourth on the Challenger Tour last time out, winning the event in Quebec City. He defeated Stefanos Sakellaridis in the final and dropped just the one set across the tournament. He has now moved inside the top 40 for the first time in his career.

Van Assche received a bye in the opening round and now takes on Aleksandar Kovacevic. The American advanced after a straight sets win over Felix Balshaw. Kovacevic was not broken on serve and didn’t even concede a break point as he won 6-4 7-6 (4) after an hour and 18 minutes. He also won a commanding 91% of his points on first serve.

Kovacevic will be hoping for a similarly strong serving display in the next round, but Van Assche is a significant step up in opposition. The higher-ranked Frenchman will be expected to win.
