Luca Nardi has struggled for form all season but suddenly burst into life in Cincinnati, as he qualified for the tournament and then won three matches in the main draw to reach the fourth-round, where he would lose to Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets. The Italian will take plenty of confidence from that run as he prepares for the US Open in New York.

His first-round opponent is Tomas Machac, who is the 21st seed. The Czech has been in poor form of late, with early losses in Toronto and Cincinnati. He is currently on a three match winless run and has not picked up a victory since the first-round of Wimbledon. Machac did win the Acapulco Open in early March but his form has taken a slide since, while he has also struggled to stay fit. 

They have faced each other at three indoor Challenger events in the past, with Machac leading 2-1. Nardi seems to be peaking at the right time and has already shown in the past that he can beat higher-ranked players. Machac did reach the fourth-round here last year, and is still the favourite to advance, but a set or two being dropped is very possible.
