Lorenzo Sonego earned his first tour-level win on grass this season as he overcame Mariano Navone in three sets. The Italian broke his opponent in the fifth game of the decider and held his serve from that point to clinch a 7-6 (2) 2-6 6-4 victory after two hours and 53 minutes. Sonego did give up 11 break point opportunities, but managed to save nine of them.
He will now play Miomir Kecmanovic. The Serb came from a set down to defeat Antoine Ghibaudo. Kecmanovic began poorly, losing the first four games of the match as Ghibaudo took control. Nevertheless, he levelled in the second set and was on the verge of a victory at 6-1 up in the deciding tiebreak. He spurned five match points, as his opponent reeled off a number of points in a row, but managed to convert at the sixth attempt.
Sonego leads the head-to-head 4-2 and 2-0 on grass. Both players will need to improve in the next round, and there could be momentum shifts in this one.
