Lorenzo Sonego vs Matteo Berrettini prediction
Lorenzo Sonego is competing in his first event since the Australian Open. He could only make the second-round, as he lost to compatriot Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets. Having made the quarter-finals in 2025, Sonego’s ranking dropped 20 places and he is now just inside the top 60 in the world.
He faces another fellow Italian in former slam finalist Matteo Berrettini. He has already begun his South American clay court swing as he finally got his 2026 campaign up and running in Buenos Aires. Berrettini defeated Federico Coria in his first-round match, but he was largely uncompetitive against Vit Kopriva as he lost in straight sets.
Berrettini leads the ATP head-to-head 4-1 and 1-0 on clay. Their last meeting was in Marrakech two years ago, with Berrettini winning in straight sets. Berrettini will try to be aggressive and end points early, while Sonego is comfortable in extending the rallies and opening up the court with angles. There is strong value in this being a competitive encounter between the two Italians.
