Lorenzo Sonego vs Holger Rune Prediction
Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego was one of the revelations of the Australian Open as he made it all the way to the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Ben Shelton. The 29-year-old achieved his best-ever finish at a Grand Slam event and that will give him plenty of confidence for the rest of the season.
During that run to the quarters, Sonego beat two of the best young talents in the game – Joao Fonseca and Learner Tien – and he has to be pleased with his performance levels in Melbourne.
He now faces a tough opening match in Rotterdam as he plays Holger Rune in the first round.
The Dane reached the round of 16 in Melbourne before losing to eventual winner Jannik Sinner. He showed real grit in getting to that stage after coming through two five-set battles and a four-setter with Matteo Berrettini.
He has not had a break since Australia as he was on Denmark duty in the Davis Cup last week so he comes into this with little rest and recovery although that should not be an issue at this stage of the season.
Rune has won both previous meetings with Sonego but both matches went to three sets. There is every chance that this one follows suits as Rune has to be marginally favoured but it would be no surprise if Sonego takes it all the way given how well he has been playing.
