Lorenzo Musetti vs Novak Djokovic prediction

Lorenzo Musetti will need to pull off the mother of all upsets to stun ten-time champion Novak Djokovic and reach his first ever semi-final at Melbourne Park.

The Italian has a woeful 1-9 record in his head-to-head with the Serb and has lost their last six meetings.

However, on a more positive note, the fifth seed’s upward trajectory appears to be continuing after a stellar 2025 season. The 23-year-old holds a 7-1 record so far this year following a run to the final in Hong Kong as preparation for the ‘Happy Slam’.

Excellent wins over Tomas Machac and hardcourt specialist Taylor Fritz last time out suggest he is becoming a much greater threat on his least favoured surface statistically, but we all know Djokovic at a Grand Slam is a whole other challenge.

The 38-year-old Serb looked sharp in the earlier rounds and will be well rested after being handed a fourth-round walkover as a result of Jakub Mensik’s withdrawal through injury.

Musetti has given Djokovic a scare in two of their previous three Grand Slam showdowns, leading 2-0 and 2-1 at the French Open before being going down in five sets.

The Italian’s solitary win came on clay at the Monte Carlo Masters in 2023 but he will take some belief from their last meeting when he again led before being beaten 4-6 6-3 7-5 on a hardcourt in a final in Athens in November.

Musetti can clearly do damage and has the venom off both flanks to trouble Djoker here. But winning a set – or even two – is totally different to getting over that finish line.

Djokovic is ‘Mr Clutch’ in key moments on the biggest stages and he has only ever lost nine matches at Melbourne Park.

The 24-time major winner may lose his tenth at some point this year, but we don’t expect it to be against the fifth seed, with the best value on Lorenzo likely to be on him taking it over three sets.

Lorenzo Musetti vs Novak Djokovic tip: Over 3.5 sets
