Lorenzo Musetti came through a tough first-round match with Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard to advance at the US Open. The big serving Frenchman had collected a few wins at the Winston-Salem Open last week and looked set to cause problems for Musetti after taking the first set on a tiebreak. Nevertheless, Musetti fought back superbly as he recovered to win 6-7 6-3 6-4 6-4. Despite trailing, the Italian did not actually face a break point during the entire match.
His opponent in the next round is David Goffin, after he picked up his first win in five matches in round one against Quentin Halys. The 34-year-old also lost the first set on a tiebreak but came back to win 6-7 6-4 6-3 7-5 after three hours and 13 minutes. Goffin was broken at 5-4 in the fourth when serving for the match but broke straight back to win.
The head-to-head is 2-1 in Musetti’s favour but 1-1 on outdoor hard court. They played each other in the first-round here three years ago, with Musetti winning in five sets. Despite Goffin’s victory, he still committed 51 unforced errors and over 10 double faults, and those errors will be exploited by a higher-ranked player. We can’t see anything other than a Musetti victory.
