Lois Boisson continued her recent good form on hard courts with a fine victory over Liudmila Samsonova. The slower conditions seem to suit Boisson’s game in Beijing, as she won 6-3 6-4 after an hour and 22 minutes. The French Open semi-finalist was impressive on serve, conceding just two break points and having a first serve percentage of 76%.
Emma Navarro recovered from a slump in the second set to get past Elena-Gabriela Ruse in round two. The American took the first set and stormed to a 5-1 lead in the second, only to be broken on two straight occasions as Ruse fought back. She then failed to serve out the match for a third time at 6-5 up but recovered in the tiebreak to win 6-2 7-6.
Boisson is likely to cause problems for Navarro, but the 18th seed will be expected to come out on top.
