Liudmila Samsonova vs Yafan Wang prediction
Liudmila Samsonova battled her way through her first-round match as she defeated Caroline Dolehide in straights. The first set was straight-forward enough for the top seed, who broke in the seventh game to take the set 6-4. The second set was anything but, as Dolehide opened up a 5-1 lead and looked set to take the match into a decider. Nevertheless, the 2022 champion broke twice in succession and reeled off four straight games, while also saving six set points to draw level, before dominating the tiebreak to seal victory.
She will face Yafan Wang after she beat Peyton Stearns in three sets. She made the crucial breakthrough at the beginning of the third set as she took a 3-0 lead, eventually going on to win 6-4 3-6 6-3 after two hours and five minutes. This result will have been sweet for Wang after losing to Stearns less than two weeks ago in Cincinnati, and it’s perhaps her best win to date since her return from injury.
Samsonova was not at her best in the opening round, but we expect an improvement here against Wang and another straight sets win for the top seed.
