Liudmila Samsonova advanced to the round-of-16 of a WTA 1000 event for the first time this season as she defeated Maya Joint in three sets. Samsonova was a set and a break up, but Joint extended the contest after winning the second set on a tiebreak. Nevertheless, the 27-year-old regrouped to win 7-5 6-7 (3) 6-2 after two hours and 52 minutes.
She will now play Elena Rybakina. The world number two produced a measured display to defeat Ann Li in straight sets. The two-time Grand Slam champion was 5-3 down in the second set and had to save a set point, but she reeled off the final four games to complete a 6-2 7-5 victory.
Samsonova does lead the 4-2 in the head-to-head and 4-1 on outdoor hard court, though Rybakina has won their last two meetings. The Russian knows she has caused Rybakina problems in the past, and the latter has been unconvincing at times so far at this event.
