The Russian was barely troubled in her opening three matches, not even dropping a set, but she would fall to a narrow loss in the round-of-16 to Olympic champion Qinwen Zheng. She also made the final in Strasbourg just a week prior, losing to Elena Rybakina.

Samsonova is in good form and enters the tournament as the top seed. She takes on Carson Branstine in the first-round. The Canadian enters the main draw as a qualifier after failing to get past that stage in Birmingham a week ago. She is ranked 231 in the world and usually competes on the Challenger Tour.

This should be light work for Samsonova as she begins her transition to grass for the next month. She won the title here last year and she should begin her defence with a dominant win.
