Linda Noskova will hope to continue the momentum after her best performance at a WTA 1000 event in Beijing last week. She won five matches in a row, including a dramatic semi-final against Jessica Pegula where she saved match points, to make the final at the China Open where she lost to Amanda Anisimova in three sets. The 20-year-old is now up to her highest ranking of 17 in the world and has made two finals this season.
Her first-round opponent in Wuhan is Yulia Putintseva. She easily won both of her two qualifying matches to make the main draw. She lost in the first-round of the China Open to Yue Yuan, and her best result on the WTA Tour this season was all the way back in the second week of January, when she reached the last four in Adelaide.
Noskova leads the head-to-head 2-1. Putintseva won their first meeting at the US Open last year, but the Czech has won their two matches this year in Doha and Dubai, coming through in straight sets on both occasions. Considering her fine form, there’s a strong chance she wins in similar fashion here.
