Linda Noskova suffered a post-Wimbledon hangover in Toronto as she lost her opening match to Caty McNally in straight sets. That was her first event since winning her first major title at SW19, and the Czech will be hoping for a far deeper run at this WTA 1000 tournament. She is the sixth seed and faces Katie Boulter in her first match.
The former British number one ended a five-match losing run as she beat Katie Volynets in the opening round. Boulter did not even win a game in the second set after going in front, but she held her nerve in the decider to win 7-5 0-6 6-4. This was Boulter’s first victory since beating Elena Rybakina at the quarter-final stage of Queen’s Club back in June.
Boulter will be reinvigorated after winning that battle in round one, but Noskova is likely to be more settled for this event. Her solid game should have too much for the Brit.
