Linda Noskova got off to a strong start in New York as she beat Dalma Galfi in straight sets. The Czech did not even face a break point as she got her campaign going with a comfortable 6-4 7-5 win. She has enjoyed a strong year, having made the final in Prague last month and reached a high of 23 in the world rankings. She was unable to defend her Monterrey Open title last week but Noskova is still competing well and a strong contender for a deep run.
Eva Lys also got through in straight sets as she beat Francesca Jones. The German made a storming start as she won the first six games, but the second set was more testing for Lys, with Jones going a break up on two occasions. The 23-year-old still came through to win 6-0 7-5. She impressed in Cleveland last week before having to withdraw.
Noskova will look to dominate the rallies with her strong groundstrokes and powerful serve. Lys may be able to withstand longer exchanges but the Czech’s overall firepower gives her the edge.
