Linda Noskova continued her fine run of form with an impressive victory over four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka. The Czech edged ahead after a tight first set and secured the crucial first break of the match in the eighth game of the second set to win 7-6 6-3. Noskova wasn’t broken on serve and has now won seven of her last eight matches, having got through to her first WTA 1000 final in Beijing just a few days ago.
She will now face Elena Rybakina. The Kazakhstani was very solid on serve as she began her campaign in Wuhan with a straight-forward victory over Jaqueline Cristian. Rybakina will need a strong showing at this tournament to bolster her hopes of qualifying for the WTA Finals in Riyadh next month.
Rybakina leads the head-to-head 2-0 and 1-0 on hard court without the drop of a set. Their last encounter was in the semi-finals of the Brisbane International at the beginning of last year, with the 2022 Wimbledon champion winning 6-3 6-2. Despite Noskova’s strong run of results, Rybakina has the experience and the power from both wings to win.
