Linda Noskova picked up her first victory since winning the Wimbledon title as she got past Katie Boulter in her opening match at the Cincinnati Open. The Czech suffered an early defeat at the Canadian Open, but she returned to winning ways with a 6-3 6-3 win. Noskova only conceded two break points on serve.
She can now look forward to a match with Clara Tauson in round three. Tauson came through a tight three set match against Peyton Stearns in the previous round. The Dane saved three set points in a close first set tiebreak to take the lead, but Stearns hit back as she dominated the second to level the match. Tauson was 4-1 down in the third set but won six of the remaining seven games to complete a 7-6 (7) 1-6 7-5 win after two hours and 50 minutes.
Tauson leads the head-to-head 2-0 after a couple of victories last year, including at the Australian Open. She has troubled Noskova in the past with her powerful game, but the Czech is playing the more consistent tennis right now. This should be a competitive third-round match.
