Linda Fruhvirtova only entered the main draw as a lucky loser but is now through to the second-round after a win over Zhuoxuan Bai. The Czech created 14 break point opportunities in total, winning 6-2 6-3. Fruhvirtova will now face Liudmila Samsonova for a place in round three.

Samsonova is the 29th seed and received a bye in the opening round. She last competed in Guadalajara. The 27-year-old began her campaign with wins over Elsa Jacquemot and Kayla Day before continuing her unbeaten run against Marta Kostyuk, beating the top seed 4-6 6-2 7-5 to advance to the semi-finals. She was the favourite against Peyton Stearns but lost in straight sets to the American. That was her best result of the campaign. 

Samsonova will hope to carry on the momentum with a strong performance and convincing win over Fruhvirtova, as she aims for a deep run at this WTA 1000 tournament.
