Leylah Fernandez did show some encouraging signs at the Canadian Open. Fernandez comfortably got past Renata Zarazua and then delighted the home crowd with another straight sets victory over Roland Garros champion Mirra Andreeva. She would exit at the round-of-16 stage after a defeat to four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka. Fernandez is yet to reach a semi-final this season, and she has won only 15 of her 36 matches in 2026.
She received a bye in the first-round and now faces Xiyu Wang. The Chinese player won her first tour-level match this season as Maria Timofeeva had to retire in the second set of their round one match. Wang was leading 6-0 3-0. She has shone at the lower-level events this season, with 35 wins from 43 matches overall this season.
This is far from a straight-forward opening match for Fernandez, but she has enough resilience to grind out a victory.
