Leylah Fernandez picked up one of her best results of the season so far as she defeated top seed Jessica Pegula in three sets. The Canadian’s level dropped alarmingly in the middle of the match, losing seven service games in a row at one point, but she came back from an early break down in the decider to win 6-3 1-6 7-5. Fernandez won 77% of her first serve points but will also want to iron out some errors ahead of her quarter-final match, as she committed nine double faults. This was her second top 10 victory of the season and she’s now into her second quarter-final of the year.

Her opponent will be Taylor Townsend as she made just her second tour-level quarter-final with a comfortable win over Sofia Kenin. The first set was on serve, but Townsend then completely dominated as she won nine service games in a row to win 6-3 6-0.

The quicker conditions in Washington are well-suited to Fernandez’s game and she’s striking the ball nicely this week. The victory over Pegula will give her a boost and she will be a big favourite to defeat Townsend and get through to her first semi-final of the year.
