Leylah Fernandez vs Maria Sakkari prediction

Leylah Fernandez picked up her second title of the season in Osaka last time out as she overcame Tereza Valentova in the final to win the event. Fernandez also won the Washington Open in July and will want to round off the season with another strong performance in Tokyo. 

Maria Sakkari is her first-round opponent. The former world number three needed to qualify to make the main draw but managed to do so, getting past Zeynep Sonmez and Suzan Lamens. It’s been a difficult season for the Greek, who has a negative win-loss record in 2025. She has failed to get past the quarter-finals of any tournament during this campaign.

She leads the head-to-head 3-1 but Fernandez registered her first victory against Sakkari just last month in Beijing with a dominant 6-2 6-0 win in the second-round. Given her recent success, Fernandez will be the hot favourite to win this. However, it should be noted that the 2021 US Open finalist did experience a sudden downturn in form after winning the title in Washington a few months ago.
