Leylah Fernandez is still searching for her first win this season after poor preparation in the lead up to the Australian Open. The Canadian competed in Brisbane but lost her first-round match to Dayana Yastremska before another straight sets loss to Diana Shnaider in Adelaide. Fernandez can be a strong player on hard courts, as shown by her title in Washington last year and her run as a teenager to the final of the US Open in 2021, but she is yet to get going in this campaign.

She faces Janice Tjen in round one. She has also made a slow start to the campaign with two losses out of two. She was on the end of a three set defeat to Sonay Kartal in Auckland and then lost heavily to Iva Jovic in Hobart.

Fernandez has not been close to her best so far, but she should still have too much quality for Tjen in this first-round match.
