World number 31 Leylah Fernandez will be looking to get Canada off to a winning start. The 22-year-old Quebec native partners with Felix Auger-Aliassime for their nation as they face a tough Group A which also contains USA.
Fernandez had a mixed 2024 which she ended with 31-24 record in the singles with no titles. She now faces Donna Vekic in this opening match and that will be a tough assignment.
Vekic did not win a title in 2024 but she ended the year ranked 19 in the world with a 32-20 record in the singles. The 28-year-old Croatian is partnered by Borna Coric and she will be hoping to get a win in the singles given the fact she is somewhat weaker than Fernandez in the doubles.
Surprisingly, these two have never met on the WTA Tour but Vekic will want to put a marker down against her younger opponent. We just favour her to edge this but it really is a match that could go either way.
